Which is better, the HMS Queen Elizabeth or the new Ford class Aircraft Carrier?

Which is better, the HMS Queen Elizabeth or the new Ford class Aircraft Carrier?
The problem with this question is that it assumes that “better” is an all or nothing state. In most things, and certainly in the case of the QE vs. the Ford, this quite simply isn’t true.
HMS Queen Elizabeth will weight in at about 70,000 tons, cruise at about 25 knots (they say), carry a little shy of 2,000 sailors, flyers, and marines, and be able to field around 40 aircraft. Cost: $5b U.S.
USS Gerald R. Ford will weigh in at about 100,000 tons, cruise at about 30 knots (they say), carry a little shy of 4,700 sailors, flyers, and marines, and be able to field around 75 aircraft. Cost $12.8b U.S.

Does it matter who is the best?  We are allies, aren't we?

At first glance this question is a no brainer. Of course the USS Gerald R Ford (USGF) is far better than the HMS Queen Elizabeth (UKQE). The USGF is bigger, it's nuclear, it carries more aircraft, it has EMALS / Cats & Traps, etc. etc. etc. a no contest!

However to realistically understand them you have to compare the overall UK carrier project to the USS Gerald R Ford carrier project. The UK project is a joint project for 2 (two) carriers HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales where as the US project is for 1 (one) carrier. Now looking at them from a resouce perspective some very surprising things start to become apparent. The UKQE Class costs about $8 Billion for the 2 carrier project whilst the USGF costs $13 Billion for the one carrier i.e. The UKQE Class is about $5 Billion cheaper or about -50% less per project.
Now when you compare the two projects really interesting things happen :

The two UKQE Class ships total displacement is140,000 Metric Tonnes whilst the USGF displacement is 100,000 Tons
i.e. about 40% less than the two UKQE ships.
The two UKQE Class ship's flightdeck area is 8 Acres whilst the USGF flightdeck area is 4.5 Acres
i.e.Approx. 75% less than the two UKQE ships.
The two UKQE Class ship's can carry about 60+ aircraft each or 120+ aircraft in total whilst the USGF carries about 90+ aircraft
i.e.Approx. 33% less than the two UKQE ships.
The two UKQE Class ship's crew numbers aprox. 3,200 whilst the USGF crew numbers approx. 4,297
i.e.Approx. 35% less crew in the two UKQE ships.
etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.
Now whilst there are numerious comparrisons between the two projects all signifying great advantages to the UKQE ships it must be remembered that if the US wanted to build ships similar to the UK there is still the build cost savings of about $5 Billion
available to introduce  EMALS / Cats & Traps and/or more powerful gas turbines and/or more crew etc. etc. into their ships.

Perhaps the best advantages that the US Navy would get from building carriers similar to the UK would be the great improvements in it's effectivness, flexibility and overall efficentcy.
However it is still not finished as over time, as the Nimitz Class is replaced the US Navy would, if building on this 2 for 1 basis
see it's Strike Carrier Fleet increase from 10 to about 20 carriers.
If, as many may think, that the above is pie in the sky and utter rubbish then I would point out that the US Congress has actually already set up a special working commitee to examine look into the possibility of cancelling some USS Gerald R Ford class ships
and replacing them with carriers similar in size to the Royal Navy's new Queen Elizabeth Class.

What is this ive got a bigger cock than you, just fucking stfu trolls. USA always got to be bigger but waste money themselves

  • bunchlead says:

Obviously the Ford has more firepower and a more diverse array of fighter aircraft etc. However if the QE has any advantages then it's will be down to innovative tech and design, IE double tower and a more computerised ship which depends less on manpower etc. If you see a future US carrier with two towers , less crew and a more computer configured ship then you will know the British design is cutting edge.
