The Soviet guided missile V/STOL aircraft carrier minsk entered the Mediterranean Sea on February 25, 1979. The Soviets have classified the Minsk as an Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) ship. The Minsk differs from most aircraft carriers in that it has no caqtapults for launching aircraft or arresting gear for recovering aircraft. Her angle flight deck permits the operation of both helicopters and verticale take off or landing aircraft. The capability to operate jet powered aircraft provides the Soviets sea-going tactical air support capability. It has a large starboard island super structure, with significant point defence and ASW weapons system.
