South Korea and the United States kicked off their annual “Key Resolve” military exercise on this Monday.
Key Resolve, which overlaps with the Foal Eagle drills, involves 290-thousand South Korean and ten-thousand U.S. troops.
The U.S. plans to mobilize some key military hardware to the peninsula for the exercises, including a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and F-35B stealth fighter jets.
The exercises come amid escalating tensions after North Korea conducted its first ballistic missile test of 2017 in February.
South Korean military officials say they have raised military awareness to closely watch movements in North Korea during the exercise period.
Key Resolve runs through March 24th.
