The nuclear-powered fleet ballistic missile submarine USS HENRY CLAY (SSEN-625) successfully fired a Polaris A-2 missile while surfaced off Cape Kennedy. This was the first attempt to launch a Polaris from a surfaced sub.

  1. I was a missile tech on board Henry Clay for her last two deployments. That surface launch did so much damage the deck surface the navy said, "Never again."
